Elizabeth's Blog - The Blame Game

A righteous man starts the torture in hell and an innocent man drinks demons blood to save the possessed. So, who’s really to blame for hell on earth?

In the Season 5 premiere of Supernatural, it is clear that both Sam and Dean blame Sam for the coming of the apocalypse. In the third episode of Season 5 (“Free to be You and Me”), it became clear that other hunters blame Sam for releasing Lucifer as well. But is Sam really to blame? Sure, he’s the one that broke the final seal, but he did not know what he was doing. Dean didn’t even know it was the final seal until it was too late. So, can you really blame Sam for doing what he thought was right?

Zachariah wasn’t forthcoming with any information either. He is an authoritative source who could have easily prevented the final seal to be broken, but like he said in “Lucifer Rising”, ‘Would we really let 65 seals get broken unless senior management wanted it that way?’

So it was a plan all along by angels…or rather select senior management. Other hunters like the ones in “Free to be You and Me” wouldn’t have known that, but Dean did. Even with this knowledge, he continued to blame Sam. In “Sympathy for the Devil,” Dean said, ‘You choose a Demon over your brother!’ Dean forgot that once upon a time that he and Bobby trusted Ruby as well. Sam was led to believe that Ruby was helping him do well. Who knows - perhaps Ruby and Zachariah were working together and the events followed their plan exactly.

We’ll never know though, because once Sam found out the truth he helped kill Ruby almost instantaneously. Shouldn’t that act alone show Sam’s true nature and feelings towards Ruby? After all, if someone tells you that you can prevent a global disaster from coming, wouldn’t any sane person try to prevent it?

And, none of this would have even mattered if Dean hadn’t broken the first seal. That is a fact that some Supernatural fans overlook. Maybe Dean just doesn’t want to take the blame. After all, Sammy already blames himself. And isn’t it easier to simply agree and believe that someone else is at fault (especially when it comes to destroying the world)?

Perhaps Dean is passing off the blame because feels guilty that he let his father down by not looking after Sam or maybe he just resents Sam for simply being born. After all, we found out in “Changing Channels” that if Sam had never been born, then none of this would’ve happened. The would have been no yellow eyed demon, no family trips to kill werewolves, and If Sam wasn’t alive then he certainly wouldn’t have died at the end of Season 2. And then Dean wouldn’t have sold his soul, gone to hell and broken the seal. It could be possible that Dean realized this and resents his younger brother for indirectly causing him to break the first seal. Whatever the reason Dean has failed to acknowledge his part in the apocalypse.

So who is really to blame: Dean who turned the key or Sam who opened the door? I don’t think there is a quick and easy answer. The boys will have get over the blame game fast though, or their lack or trust in themselves or each other could mean the death of humanity.
